Beyond the Mirror
A
WINTER OF
Photo credit D. Hagg @ Garrett Co., MD
Winter is a time of stark reality. A few
months where life is somewhat put on hold. It is also the season when we have
a lot of time to ponder. West Virginians accept winter as the most
unpredictable of all seasons. We half-jokingly say if you don't like our
Appalachian weather, don't worry, it’s about to change.
For those of us engaging in the Beyond the
Mirror devotional, winter means that we have an entire season to reflect on
life and the things that bug us. Or we can take this season to do something
about that stuff. To call out anything that causes anxiety, stress,
depression, or even lost hope. We can learn to manage these things through
the empowerment of God’s Holy Spirit.
Empowerment is the opportunity,
responsibility, and personal right to have authority over our life’s story.
We become Holy Ghost empowered by learning how, and when, to turn our thoughts
and feelings over to the Holy Spirit. When we do, He will enable us to
face this stuff head on. He’ll teach us how to call it out. He will then help
us reclaim personal authorship over our own lives. No wonder I am excited for
us to start this journey together! As we work to develop our
strengths and manage our weaknesses, our God given potential will emerge.
Potential that will reflect back to us from the mirror. Now that's true
empowerment.
And ladies, through this journey, we are
going to see exactly what it looks like to be a daughter of God! Y'all, we've
got this! ~Coach Kelly

A SPRINGTIME of ENCOURAGEMENT
“For behold, the winter is
past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of
singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land”
(Song of Solomon 2:11-12,
ESV).
Welcome Spring!
A time for new
beginnings. A time when the dormant
bursts forth with a strength only nature fully understands. Tulips, wild
onions, crocus, lettuce…people…all face the life season of spring. For
vegetation, spring is the time when God given potential surges forth from
hidden depths. Tentatively at first but then drawn upward by a force stronger
than themselves. And suddenly, ready to face real life elements, stands a
strong, viable plant.
Thankfully, unlike
vegetation, we have several spring-like opportunities spread out across our
lifetime. For the most part, our
spring seasons look a lot alike. We each have decisions to make,
opportunities to embrace, goals to accomplish.
And one huge question to
answer: "What am I waiting for before I truly start living?"
Ladies, let's bloom where
we're planted! ~ Coach Kelly

A SUMMER of ENLIGHTENMENT
Photo Credit: C. Lovelady @ Cayucoc, CA
Do you remember summer break as a school kid? I
remember being so excited for June 21, you’d have thought it was another
Christmas! Now, instead of dirt bike
riding and week long visits with friends, and those silly nighttime walks to
"The Store" for a vending machine Pepsi, it means mowing the yard,
repainting decks, and trying to find time for a family vacation - not an easy
task with adult children. But still, there is one happy and joyful remnant of
summers past: everything seems to lighten up.
It seems as if the summer sun melts a little of the
bottled-up winter stress. Yep, I believe that sweet-sweet-summa-time has a
way of revealing easy smiles, lifting us out of the winter funk. I really
like that about summer. There is a freedom that comes with it. That is why
I've chosen "Summer of Enlightenment" as the theme for this devotional
journey. A time to be joyfully enlightened. When we can finally take a load
off; see things a little clearer.
Over the next 13 weeks, we will be focusing on the
books of James, Titus, Acts, and Luke
- not just because I like them - but because these books have a lot to say
about how the Holy Spirit can lighten our load. They also have a lot to say
about how we can live our real lives - your life - my life - with peace and
joy. Our summer stories will be a tad lighter, less reading and more absorbing.
So grab yourself a glass of iced tea, your favorite
Bible, and let’s take a walk (through the Word) this summer! ~ Coach Kelly

EQUIPPED by FALL
A Time for Everything
For everything there
is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and
a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a
time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build
up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to
dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a
time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a
time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a
time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and
a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, ESV).
Fall...Autumn...the
season of being equipped after seedtime and harvest. Fall in the country is a
whirlwind of activity. Festivals, leaf-peeping, raking, and preparing the
soil for the upcoming spring. My childhood memories of fall include helping
my parents gather fire wood, rake leaves, and learn how to bake pies. Because
of these memories, fall always stokes happy memories of years gone by. Some memories that will last my lifetime
occurred in fall. And I hope this
Bible study, Beyond the Mirror: Facing Your Life's Nemesis, will one of
yours.
Those of us
engaged in the study thus far have studied scriptures that encourage,
enlighten, and empower. With these behind, and inside us, we are now better
equipped for fall. So what are we
gonna do with this abundance of knowledge? Why, we're going to harvest what
we've planted and spread the joy! Over
these next twelve weeks, we are going to put the components together, and
share ways to witness to our neighbors about the love of Christ. Ladies - be
blessed! ~Coach Kelly
